No investigation in charge against Rep. Space
I read about how Representative Zack Space was caught driving without his license and I was amazed by how silly the rules of the House actually can be. I understand that it is important to hold all people accountable for their actions and that the ethics committee has an obligation to ensure that this process happens. However, to even waste time talking about whether further discipline should take place in a case like this is a bit too much for me. I know how easy it is to forget your license at home and I honestly do not think Space did anything terribly wrong or intended to break the law. For that I am pleased that no further investigation was required because that simply would have been a terrible use of the committee's short time frame to look over more worthwhile measures. Space did his part in resolving the matter by paying the fine in his state and it should have ended right there. It is one thing to have a minor infraction like this and another for members of Congress to be receiving mortgage breaks on their homes yet still be allowed to conduct business as usual. Given what we know about members like Chris Dodd, those are individuals that deserve an ethic committee's undivided attention because there is no reason why it should take this long for proper investigations to have taken place. If the ethics committee is to have any sort of power in Congress it needs to be looking into more pertinent matters and ensure the integrity of its leaders.
