Alaska Republicans call for new Senate election

Republicans are going a step further in their reclamation project now that the Justice Department has cleared former Senator Stevens. I see no way that they will get their way with a special election in Alaska because there does not seem to be anything that Mark Bagich has done wrong that could qualify for a special election. The way I see it, Bagich won the election fair and square. It just serves as a lesson to the Republican Party that even if a person is widely renowned in the state he/she is running in, legal problems might indicate a reason to drop them as a candidate. Stevens could have made it easier on the Party by withdrawing, but given how close he was to winning despite his problems I am not sure the Party could have hoped for anything better. The claim that the Justice Department is no longer investigating the former Senator to me is something that really does not make a huge difference because had Stevens won, I think the investigation would have continued and he probably would have seen punishment to fit his crimes. President Obama seems to be making a gesture towards the Republicans by allowing for this case to be dismissed, but I cannot imagine how he would have allowed this to happen if Democrats had lost in Alaska. Unfortunately, a cloud will ring over Bagich's name until the next election in 2014 when Alaskans will have the opportunity to determine if he was a good representative for them.
