Military Wants 10,000 More Troops for Afghanistan
The military is expected to submit a request for 10,000 more troops for Afghanistan (on top of the 21,000 additional troops + unnumbered support personel just recently announced). Obama is expected to make a decision on the request this fall, so any more troops sent to Afghanistan would not enter the theatre until early 2010. With the recent announcement of 21,000 more soldiers, total U.S. troops in Afghanistan will top 60,000. However, this is still not enough to hold territory after it has been cleared of insurgents. Therefore, I expect Obama to approve the request for 10,000 more soldiers. Question is, should he be announcing these increases in a piece-meal fashion, or should he have just done it all at once?
