Bishop to skip Notre Dame commencement over Obama

I find it curious as to how President Obama's decision to make a commencement speech at Notre Dame can be drawing so much backlash. At some point people need to begin thinking about the bigger issues in life than solely about someone's political opinions. President Obama is not going to be discussing his opinions on stem cell research or abortions in his speech and so there really is no reason for someone like the local bishop to be boycotting the ceremony on those grounds. A commencement speech is supposed to honor the graduates whose hard work enabled them to get through the years spent studying at the university and to not give them the respect and acknowledgement they have earned is downright wrong. At a university like Notre Dame academics take a strong presence on campus and for the headlines surrounding the event being on the speaker rather than the honorees is a bit tragic.

It's pretty straight forward. This is the most public forum for the Bishop to disagree with Obama.
