Looking to set an example of efficient spending, the Obamas have decided to spend their own money to decorate the White House to their tastes.

Bravo, Obama! More and more politicians should stop living off the loop holes in bills.

How cool would it be if, in the future, Bloomberg were elected president and he told the world that his presidential salary would be $2.00 (You have to upgrade by at least a dollar when you go from Mayor to President!)?

What would really help is if the real spending problems were addressed rather than doing these little publicity stunts.

Each little "stunt" is part of a larger budget, and a larger message that Obama is trying to send.

It's more than just a publicity stunt. Although it won't fix the economy, every little bit helps. This will save a significant amount of money in the federal budget that can be allocated to a better cause.

And, it's not as if he's doing this while ignoring the rest of our economic woes. He is working towards substantive changes while also contributing to the smaller factors.

Like raising taxes on charitable contributions?

Everyone has to sacrifice in order to fix the mess we are in and fund the new programs we want (health care, envrionmental protection, afghanistan war, etc). No sector of the economy (chartities included - which already don't have to pay ANY taxes) should be exempted.

Why should charities pay taxes if their purpose of existence is a public service?

Charlie, I just don't understand why you need to argue against this. The class knows you are not in favor of his policies, but you would have ripped him a new one if this was being payed by the tax payers.
