FEC: Debt for Giuliani, Dodd, Clinton
I had never really thought about the debt accumulated during the campaign races until recently and I have a problem with candidates not balancing their books well enough. It is upsetting to me that these wealthy individuals who obviously had done something right to get where they are, are failing to run their campaigns effectively. If you cannot pay the price for what you buy or purchase then you need to reassess what you are doing. There is no reason that this late in the game that debts should be so significant especially for the candidates who were not even in the race long enough to do much. I understand that President Obama and Senator McCain had the advantage by winning their party tickets, but still at least they knew how to properly use the cash they had in hand. Running campaigns are costly, but if done astutely then there shouldn't be the large debts that we see today. Consultants, lawyers, and bankers are going to want to give you as much service as they can not only to get your money now, but also down the line if you end up winning. With that being said, do we really need 300 lawyers working for Norm Coleman and Al Franken in the Minnesota case? The answer is probably not even with some going on their own dime.
