Brown's message to the United States
So here are a few perspectives on Gordon Brown's speech yesterday. In my opinion, Brown seemed a little nervous to begin with, but managed to captivate a diverse audience. He spoke of the economy, the environment, the wars that both America and Britain had fought alongside, as well as the "special relationship" found between these two countries. He also gave a touching story about a trip to Rwanda in which he remembered reading the last words of a 10-year old boy being tortured to death "the UN will come save us." Sadly, as Mr. Brown pointed out, the UN did not make it to save all the poor people in Rwanda, especially that little boy. Brown made a number of promises and things he hopes the West can aspire to achieve like bringing education to millions of children in poor countries, and becoming more green to help protect our planet. To end, one of my favorite parts of Brown's speech occurred at the beginning when he thanked Mr. Ted Kennedy for all his help with the crisis in Northern Ireland, and gave him an honorary knighthood from the Queen. All in all, it was a great experience for me to see the British PM speak in Congress as well as to meet with Speaker Pelosi yesterday. I look forward to more exciting times ahead.
