Senator Schumer proposes waiting period for ticket resellers

I agree with Senator Schumer's idea with regard to the sale of tickets. I know firsthand how frustrating it is to see tickets be scooped up within a matter of seconds and an event to be sold out before I even click my mouse and enter in the appropriate information. With Ticketmaster and Live Nation trying to merge, I see the potential for ticket prices to be increasing anyways because essentially they will have close to a monopoly on the ticket market. Instead of allowing people to resell the tickets they buy for a profit, I would like to see the real fans get the opportunities to watch the concert or sporting event of their choice. Whenever I wish to go to a Phoenix Suns game, I always have to purchase the tickets from a secondhand broker because of how quickly their tickets sell out on Ticketmaster. I can see how people are just trying to make a living by reselling the tickets, but as a fan I get discouraged when I see tickets being sold for way over face value. I still am a bit perplexed by how Senator Schumer thinks this will stop secondhand selling as all it probably will do is delay the ticket sales from being resold for a couple of days rather than eliminate the problem altogether. But in the same vein, I can appreciate that he is trying to take a step in the right direction and am pleased that it has become an issue for discussion in the Senate.

As much as I hate the jerks who resell tickets for ridiculous prices, I'm not sure legislation is the right way to go about it. Ticket websites are starting to get smarter about preventing people from buying tickets just to sell. For example, when Smashing Pumpkins played three weeks straight of shows in San Francisco, tickets sold out in 12 seconds - but tickets were limited to two per person and were only available to be picked up at will call. Once tickets were picked up, you had to go straight inside - in other words, if you bought tickets to six different nights, you had to attend all six nights and couldn't scalp them off. And although I still didn't get tickets because of dumb scalpers who couldn't figure out this new system, I'm guessing it made them reconsider how they do their business.
