Race car driver Castroneves acquitted in tax trial
The government lost in a tax evasion case in one of the most high profile situations to come about in recent years. I was totally surprised with the end result today where pro race car driver Helio Castroneves was able to avoid jail time or any penalties for his actions over his financial situation. The one question I had entering the trial was how can a person not know how $5 million of his hard earned money could be shifted into an offshore account? That to me just means he is either extremely ignorant or that he was actually trying to avoid paying the rightful taxes to the federal government. Considering that his sister was handling his finances I can see how Helio trusted that things were being done properly, but even I go over my taxes before I submit them. Now if he doesn't want to be bothered by that small task then it is his right to pawn it off to someone else, but he cannot claim ignorance if he allows this to happen. It is his job to oversee what is going on and failing to do so just does not make sense to me. I would have liked to see the jury find some fault either with the tax attorney, Helio, or his sister because the avoidance of paying taxes is not in the nation's best interests. The one thing I am willing to concede to Helio is if the money wasn't actually transferred to his account like it should have then he shouldn't have been required to pay taxes on it until he was properly paid.
