NSA Exceeds Legal Limits In Eavesdropping Program
We talked for a brief moment yesterday at the beginning of class about the NSA's ability to hone in on people's conversations with one another and today we hear that the NSA has been taking advantage of its eavesdropping program. I have to say that I am really indifferent to the whole issue because I can see both the benefits and costs associated with such a program. I know personally that if I have something important or controversial to say to someone, I tend to do it in person rather than through cell-phone or email. However, I know that I am probably in the norm and that people do write or say things that have the potential to cause the NSA to question what is going on. For pure security reasons I think it is good for the government to be listening in on what we say and do, but for personal privacy issues I can see how it violates the notion that what you do on your own time should be your own business. I am curious to see if President Obama is going to start policing the NSA more stringently or if he will continue to go on the path that President Bush laid out with his national security policy.
