Google's Schmidt Tells Newspapers To Quit Whining And Create A Product Readers Want

Even though I am disappointed that the newspaper industry is coming to a close, I see the face value in the comments that Google's top executive made today. At the end of the day a business has to be able to produce a product that is desirable to the public at a cost that is cheap enough for citizens to purchase it, while still enabling the business to grow its profit base. Thinking about it this way gave me a similar outlook on the auto and banking industries that we have bailed out. Now that we have invested so much money in them we really have no choice but to help them work out their difficulties, but it sets an example that if a company fails to move itself towards sustainability, it will have the government to call on especially if it is an industry giant. I wonder what would have happened if we let companies go at it like we allowed Lehman brothers to do. There is no way I see us giving into the newspaper industry's need for cash infusion because at the end of the day it is inevitable that they will not be able to succeed even with a huge subsidy. I would like to see companies be held more accountable for themselves and even though it may hurt us significantly in the short term, it will give companies a lesson to live by that they need to do what is best to make profits while keeping the demand for their services high.
