Earmarks: Online hide and go seek
So much for the transparency that we were talking about last week in class. I see why some members would not want the country to know how much they asked for in earmarks especially given President Obama's strong stance against them during his campaign, but at the same time I think it foolish to claim that their websites illustrate the requests they made when they make it very hard to actually find the link and proper press releases. You have to think about the typical person when crafting a piece of legislation that urges transparency and most voters do not want to or have time to spend time searching for earmark requests to see what their representatives are actually doing for them. I think the idea of transparency is all well and good, but when representatives are simply doing the minimum required of them at the behest of their constituents then I see the measure as a failure. I would like to know where President Obama stands on this issue because I see it as unacceptable and not doing what was intended when the earmark transparency measure was put into affect.
