Kellogg chief calls for overhaul of U.S. food safety
The push for food safety took a giant leap today when the CEO of Kellogg spoke in front of Congress. I agree with him and President Obama that more serious attention needs to be paid to the recent problems we have seen with a lack of supervision and oversight in the food industry. It is unacceptable for a peanut plant to go unnoticed when it had one of the biggest salmonella outbreaks we have experienced in years. If the FDA is understaffed and cannot handle the job, maybe creating a new organization that strictly handles food issues would be the way to go. At the very least we definitely need to update some of the outdated food inspection laws that helped contribute to the mess we have found ourselves in.
