Congressional hearing survival tips
If you have never had the opportunity to attend a Congressional hearing or even plan on delivering a speech at one in the future you may want to take a look at this article. I was watching some of the AIG hearing yesterday with Geithner trying to deliver his plan for the future and what may have been done wrong in the banking bailout package and this article seems to hold some truths. You are always going to have people looking to attack and offer solutions that differ from the ones that have been taken and that is something that makes our deliberative process so successful. Yet, I saw how intense some of the opposition can be in grilling targets they feel did a bad job and unlike the article suggests I actually was reminded of the Supreme Court experience we had a couple of weeks ago. Congressmen have the opportunity to interrupt and inject their own opinions whenever they choose as do Supreme Court members and if you cannot respond in a manner that either answers their question to their liking or strikes back at them like a debate then you are destined for trouble. Obviously in both situations the inquisitors have knowledge about what has taken place and are prepared to stage a theatrical performance to get their point across if they choose, but if you can handle the heat then you can definitely see some success.
