This reminded me of a panel discussion I attended at Hamilton with my APP class freshman year, featuring Frank Vlossak, Ambassador Walker, and Alicia Davis '97. Davis said that more people hold a conservative ideology regardless of party affiliation. She explained that voters will choose one candidate over another based on factors such as current government performance approval rather than strictly party affiliation. Davis attributed America's discontent with the GOP to Obama's election in 2008. https://my.hamilton.edu/news/story/alumni-panelists-discuss-implications-of-obama-election
With the public's confidence in government at a decline, President Obama has obstacles to face in next year's election.
