Was it just me or did the atmosphere in audience seem subdued, almost gloomy?
Maybe a little bit. I would have categorized them as tense rather than subdued.
But perhaps rightfully so. Compared to the average State of the Union, the only other time we really see joint sessions, last night's speech had a very serious motivator - an economy in trouble. Democrat or Republican, I think it's hard to get excited about a President speaking on that subject.
