US wants limits on Antarctic tourism
I am surprised by the number of people who want to visit Anarctica on tourist vacations. I know that I would not even consider travelling there due to the extremely cold weather. I guess it does serve its purpose by protecting wildlife and serving as a location for scientific research to unravel, but I just cannot imagine heading down there. I like that President Obama wants to limit the number of tourists who can visit the area because it cannot be good for the environment to have ice breaking and oil spilling throughout the waters. Cruise ships will probably be hit the hardest because if they are restricted on the number of passengers they can bring ashore then they will have less ability to maximize their space and profits in Anarctica. With the industry already struggling mightily, this may not be something that they want to see passed and I can see them putting up a fight if it comes down to it. But what it all boils down to is the safety of the people on board and the wildlife on shore and if a measure like this is the way to accomplish these goals, then I can see how important it is for the United States to push forward in its efforts to get it signed and effectuated into law.
