Report Envisions Shortage of Teachers as Retirements Escalate
The National Commission on Teaching and America's Future recently released a study saying that cities are going to have to spend millions of dollars over the next few years training and hiring new teachers. According to this article 1/3 of the 3.2 million teachers in the US could retire, creating a serious shortage of teachers. This raises a whole host of issues including mentoring younger teachers, pensions and health benefits, along with encouraging younger adults to become teachers to replace the retiring ones. I think that unless we make some drastic changes, it is going to be very hard to replace all of the retiring teachers.
