Congress to consider saving newspapers

Starting on April 30th, John Kerry will be holding hearings on how to save America's newspapers. An already proposed bill would allow newpaper companies to become non-profit organizations, meaning their income from advertisements and subscriptions would be tax exempt, but that they would not be allowed to make political endorsements. I think this is a fantastic trade-off since newspaper endorsements don't matter as much as they used to. Whether Kerry will agree to this plan is yet to be seen.

Whoa, total disagree! Yeah, it'd be great for newspapers to be considered nonprofits, but I'd be very nervous this would end up seriously limiting them. I'd be concerned "endorsement" would end up constituting support or criticism of policies. Even if newspaper endorsements themselves aren't important anymore (which I'm not sure I agree with), they still provide information that I consider to be invaluable. Yes, I'd like to save the newspaper industry, but not at the cost of its rights.
