Class and Charter Day 2009

Apparently the administration has canceled the g-road festivities. I'm not sure how they are going to enforce this but the powers that be feel the festivities are dangerous.

Personally, I feel that g-road is a safer venue. By concentrating the shenanigans, it is easier to monitor the shenanigans and keep the shenanigans relatively safe. Eliminating the g-road venue is not only anti-American, it is more dangerous because now kids will be all over campus.

Last year there were 4 ambulances at G-Road at one time. If that is an indication of how safe it is, then I am not impressed. Furthermore, people live next to G-Road and have reported seeing disgusting acts occurring on their property every year.

Something tells me that another all-campus event will replace G-Road next year. One idea that has been floated is to have May Day and Class & Charter Day at the same time. This way, all the wasted students can be together at a kick ass concert on Minor Field. It would be controlled and not on private property, thereby avoiding the KPD. What do you think of this idea?

May Day festivities almost never please everyone because without fail someone's unhappy about the performers, etc etc. Class and charter day happens once a year and is a tradition sanctioned by the school. I actually agree that it's safer to have everyone all in the same place at g-road. If an event like a concert was held on minor field more people would be likely to have smaller parties in suites, which would probably cause more EMT cases. The good thing about G road is that everyone leaves around the same time and goes home and calls it a day, or at least takes a break.

It definitely is terrible for families who live on g road, but they know when they decide to live there that they are right on the edge of a college campus. Also, they could choose to leave for the day/weekend to avoid it if they are that offended. Maybe the school should think of putting up partitions between G road housing and private properties to keep students off of other's lawns, but they shouldn't cancel the g road festivities.

After talking to some Hamilton people, it seems the administration's logic (from ISC and Student Assembly meetings) is if people don't settle at G Road, they won't drink as much.

Personally, I don't think that will be the case and people will still continue to drink large quantities of alcohol. At least last year all 4 ambulances were centered in part of campus...

I cannot believe someone that goes to our school just proposed to combine May Day and Class and Charter Day. I was so angry at hearing the news I could not sleep, and this comment has made me more infuriated. People are going to drink that day, on a day that the school has known about and dealt with before we were born. Warzel mentioned to me how hypocritical it was, since they signed that initiative last year.

Glad to see all the comments! My guess is that the idea is to get more students into the Chapel for awarding of prizes. Will it work?

Katie Donlevie said...

No, trying to get more students to the Chapel won't be successful. For those who get awards it's great to go to the chapel but for everyone else it's a beautiful spring day, the last day of classes, and everyone wants to celebrate that. Not only that, but professors usually encourage students in their class and charter day endeavors. More people won't show up at the chapel. This plan will make so many Hamilton students angry at the school.

As Mia and I were just discussing ... a campus full of angry drinkers is never a good alternative.

I will transfer to Colgate if they combine Class and Charter Day and May Day.

G-Road is a tradition. There is definitely some middle ground we can compromise on. Eliminating the entire thing is a terrible idea.

In addition, I'm unhappy that the school simply laid down the law here. This policy would not only be better crafted but could also be more legitimate if students played an active role in its formation.

Maybe I'd go to the chapel if they gave me a scholarship instead of giving me points.

Oh and one more thing.

I'm not defending other people's decisions, or their tolerance, but the fleet of ambulances shows that medical attention was able to get to these kids.

If everyone was spread throughout the campus, would those people have gotten the medical attention they needed? (we have a 1500 acre campus to 1800 students)

Yes, you can argue that there should not be that many shenanigans. Canceling G-Road this year is not going to limit the level of shenanigans. Instead, canceling this venue eliminates a venue that helped keep Hamilton students safe.

I cannot even do work I am so upset right now.

Charlie, maybe you should ask President Urgo to tweet on the issue. Back to work!

Assembly minutes confirm Mr. Ruff's worst fears. I'm quitting!
