Brain Researchers Open Door to Editing Memory

OK so this article has nothing to do with political science, but it is really fascinating. Scientists have discovered ways to tinker with memory by using a certain drug. So far only tested on animals, this drug is a major breakthrough in the study of the brain's activities and functions.

This drug will most likely become controversial if and when it enters the market due to its invasive effects. Although somewhat questionable, the drug has the potential to produce amazing benefits. By targeting certain memory functions in the brain, it can end chronic fears and even addictions. It can even possibly strengthen memories and reduce the risks of dementia.

This breakthrough in the field of neuroscience will produce a deluge of questions about the ethics of people manipulating their brain's natural functions. Although there are many questions still to be answered and many avenues still to be researched, I have to admit it would be nice to eradicate certain habits and fears. Like my overwhelming fear of spiders...

Do you think the potential benefits outweigh the ethical questions?
