Obama's Reliance on Teleprompters

This editorial is perhaps a bit harsh on the President, but it's interesting to note the changes that media technology has made in presidential speeches. Are modern presidents getting less rhetorically skilled, so that they must rely on cued materials to remember their points? Or has the political atmosphere simply gotten so complex that keeping all the relevant facts and talking points in mind for the 24/7 news cycle would be impossible for any president? Whatever the answer, teleprompters are not likely to go away.
