"She referred to me as Ellen, not Professor Lewin, which is the correct way for a student to address a faculty member, or indeed, for anyone to refer to an adult with whom they are not acquainted,"
This makes me laugh, especially since she fired off "F--k you" beforehand. While I do not think what the College Republicans did was tasteful it is pretty shocking for a Professor, especially an Anthropology professor, to upbraid the students' choice of language.

Kinda scary that she didn't get fired.

Sounds like these College Republicans got what was coming to them.

Having a teacher say F you to them? and then having her apologize for upsetting their "delicate sensitivities". I don't even think what they did is offensive at all. Teachers getting doctors notes so they can go protest is ridiculous and deserves to be made fun of. And how saying coming out is in any way offensive to gays is baffling to me.

Megan Cairns is a great American!

I'm kidding Megan, but if TJE saw an article with the roles of the professor and political club switched, would he blog it?

Megan said...

That's what the rest of the class is for.

TJE said...

Yes. As a general rule, dropping the F bomb on any student is a bad idea.

An animal rights BBQ?! You have to admit that's pretty bad...

Megan said...

Hopefully there weren't any animals around that got offended.

Megan said...

But yeah, I'll give you that that is offensive to people who are passionate about animal rights.

Personally all this story is reinforcing to me is that it's a damn shame that we're forced to care about the state of Iowa at all.

If you ask me, they've only ever produced one great export, and that's Tom Vilsack.

Rule 2. If you drop an F bomb on a student don't excuse it by the mental anguish of not being call "PROFESSOR."

I <3 Tom Vilsack

Tom Vilsack is a great American-- and DU!

His wife is going to run against Rep. Steve King (of the Crazies, R) in Iowa.

History of the F Bomb. One of my favorite movies ranks near the top of F bombs.

I think this means, "Ellen, please don't drop the Fbomb on students,"

Update :University of Iowa President Sally Mason has responded to the incident by sending out a blast email. Mason’s response was “spurred” by TheIowaRepublican.com’s story about the incident.

Dear Members of the University Community:

The University of Iowa encourages freedom of expression, opposing viewpoints, and civil debate about those opposing viewpoints. This is clearly articulated in our core values of Diversity and Respect. Because diversity, broadly defined, advances its mission of teaching, research, and service, the University is dedicated to an inclusive community in which people of different cultural, national, individual, and academic backgrounds encounter one another in a spirit of cooperation, openness, and shared appreciation.

The University also strongly encourages student engagement in such discussions and supports students acting on their viewpoints. Student organizations are sometimes formed along political lines and act on their political beliefs. Even if we personally disagree with those viewpoints, we must be respectful of those viewpoints in every way. Intolerant and disrespectful discord is not acceptable behavior.
