Top House Leadership Aide Admits GOP Only Wants Non-Defense Discretionary Spending Cuts

So, we are headed for a government shutdown because the White House is offering to cut spending including mandatory spending, aka entitlements, by $ 30 billion through the end of this fiscal year, but the GOP wants Dems to pick from "their menu" aka the CR, and does not accept these newly proposed cuts. Basically, they want Dems to only agree to cuts from non-defense discretionary spending. Aren't they the ones saying we need to tackle entitlements? Aren't they the supposedly serious deficit reducers?

top Republican aid?

Yea Megan, I am sort of skeptical of this quote as well. I doubt this is the universal belief of the GOP. While they may have different approaches, it is hard for me to believe that they want to avoid the issue all together.

I'm pretty sure I'm quoted in some crazy lady's blog as saying Chris Lee doesn't care about the country he only cares about the 26th district of NY because I told he to call her own Representative.

News sources don't just make things up. People talk to them and don't want to be named, which is why they just say aide. This occurs almost every day in almost every story in almost every political journal. These are the beliefs of the House GOP leadership, and this is why we are going to have a government shutdown.

Even if this was not said, which I highly doubt, the GOP rejected Obama's offer which was meeting them halfway AND trying to rein in entitlements. What else do they want from these negotiations? Do they really think they can pass 100 billion worth of cuts when Dems control the WH and Senate? They can't get everything they want in this situation. I know they were "elected on a mandate to shrink government" but they need to realize that that isn't going to happen to the extent that their far-right tea party supporters want. I don't care what your political beliefs are, this is pure hypocrisy and stupidity. Paul Ryan's original budget cut 32 billion and Obama and the Dems just tried to meet him there. The House GOP is radical and does not know how to govern. They are acting like spoiled children. I just hope that they will be able to resolve the debt ceiling before failure to raise it brings on more recession.

Plus, if this quote is correct, which I take as a given, they only give the Dems the choice to cut things that they want to cut like planned parenthood, NPR, EPA, education, and welfare. It is a completely false choice and they are, again, being complete spoiled brats that don't know how to govern a country.
