Before GOPers were GIPpers

This is a really quick article--which is really an excerpt from a speech from 1876--that I came across while finalizing my outline. It's makes you reflect on how the two parties did a major dos-a-dos around the turn of the 20th Century though.

Comparing what party politicians would be in (Lincoln would be a Democrat now!) is about as fantastic (in the most literal sense of the word) as comparing Babe Ruth to Derek Jeter. Different eras, man. Different eras. But the reversal is quite shocking--progress is not exactly a Republican buzzword nowadays.

Maybe Republicans are better off with their current platform. There were seven Republican presidents between Abe and Teddy and none of them had much to write home (read: Ohio) about.
