Where is Obama and the U.N.?
Thousands of Syrian soldiers, backed by tanks, indiscriminately opened fire on a group of protesters, killing 11. There are also snipers throughout the city of Daraa, Syria, who are targeting any Protesters that they see. Obama has issued a statement condemning the shooting of Protesters but he has not done anything else. It makes no sense to me that Obama would commit Predator Drones to Libya and vow to kill Gaddafi, but remain silent on Syria, especially when peaceful protesters are being deliberately killed. The whole thing smacks of hypocrisy, and makes me wonder where is the U.N. Resolution to protect civilians in Syria?
What's Left of the Left: A Few Tin Foil Hats

Unless you find insights like, "[Paul] Krugman is short and has a very full, very round belly," to be particularly illuminating, I'd say that there are parts in the middle here that are worth skipping. But overall it paints a pretty solid portrait of the plight of Left America, the fundamental discord between the left and the Obama Administration, and perhaps most damningly, the growing sense of irrelevance that the Paul Krugmans of the world have within the political sphere today.

Domestic Oil Production: a potential remedy to rising oil prices?
I found this piece on America's oil particularly interesting because of Nat's presentation last night. One question I had was how much of an influence does OPEC really have on oil prices? Also, according to the EIA, only 51% of America's oil is imported, and of that 51%, almost half (23.3%) comes from Canada and another 10.3% comes from Mexico. Since 1992 we've imported more oil from non-OPEC countries than OPEC ones. So how much could increasing our domestic supply of oil really "send a message" to OPEC anyway?
The Paradox of Libya
The current "hands-off" approach in Libya has evolved into a bloody stalemate. Despite Obama's desperate attempts to avoid a repeat of Iraq, it's becoming increasingly clear that the situation will not be resolved quickly. Some criticize the US for failing to take on a leadership role in the conflict; however, others argue that increasing the US's involvement would only fuel anti-American sentiment while shaping future governments. One thing is clear: this middle-of-the-road approach that seems to characterize many aspects of the Obama presidency is proving unsuccessful.
Soaking the Rich Could Close the Deficit
Contrary to right-wing talking points spread from Michele Bachmann, to the Wall Street Journal, to Fox News, to everywhere else on the right, a 100% tax on the top 1% would close next year's deficit. A 100% tax on the top 10% would close the deficit for the next couple of years. Not saying I support this policy at all, just trying to undermine the right's deception with this talking point, which is used to justify Paul Ryan's plan and attack President Obama's.

Why Drones In Libya Are A Bad Idea
This article, although pretty short, makes some interesting points explaining why President Obama should not have authorized the use of Predator Drones in Libya (which he did yesterday). Essentially, he argues that Drones are a symbol of American arrogance, especially in the eyes of Muslims. I am a little surprised that we are using Drones. NATO has not lost any aircraft and there are no signs that NATO aircraft are especially at risk. Drones, ultimately, are a great weapon, but as this article points out, they may not be worth the cost in this particular conflict.
Today's serious question from Roxy

Why is TJE on the blog at 4:03 am? What time does he go to bed? What time does he wake up? Is TJE nocturnal? Does TJE like the DC program because he can sleep all day and blog all night? Does TJE ever dream about the blog? (By the way I dreamed about the blog 2 nights ago...)
And finally:
Will TJE continue to blog after his 2012 retirement?

The Story Behind "Climategate"

Kind of long, but worth a read if your interested in the subject. It examines think tank/interest group-media interaction and media coverage in general. It also adds to our earlier debate about why and how environmentalists have failed to achieve their legislative priorities since Obama's election in 2008.
