I really hope this catches... A high speed rail to replace the horror that is the Amtrak system, or at least fix it is exactly what we need. With time it'd likely build pupularity and demand, and then tickets might not be $120 for a 4 hour ride anymore! PLUS you might get there on time! Maybe i've just had less than desirable experiences, but it just seems unreasonable. A high speed rail would also get some cars off the roads -- something important as Danielle and I saw upwards of 6 car accidents and witnessed 2 yesterday driving down here...
It would just be absurd if they spent any of this initial money anywhere other than the Northeast Corridor. The Boston to Newport News VA line needed to be high-speed 15 years ago.
its pretty cool actually at work the past few weeks I've been going through every state's high speed rail applications and making summaries of them all. the biggest problem is that the stimulus bill only provided $8 bln for high speed rail; if were serious about expanding our rail infrastructure, and making it comparable to europe and asia, it will require a lot more taxing and spending, but really, wouldn't it be worth it? currently the top speed trains are allowed to reach in the us is 110 mph, while trains elsewhere go faster than double that.
