Latin America's most notorious quasi-dictator celebrated 10 years in power today, days before a February 15th referendum on whether he can run indefintetly. Chavez has said he needs another decade in power in order to finish his work of applying "21st Century Socialism" to Venezuela. So far, Chavez has had a mixed record. Poverty in Venezuela has been reduced and the poor have been enfranchised, but inflation is the highest in Latin America (30.9%), Venezuela is on its way to becoming an international pariah for Chavez's outspoken comments, oil production has declined due to lack of investment (due to nationalization), and civil unrest is growing.
I for one hope Chavez loses the referendum on the 15th. He has already tried TWICE to get this measure passed, with it failing both times. Chavez has had his chances, done some good, done some bad, and now it is time for him to go. How can he lambast the United States as an evil empire when he refuses to step down from power without a drawn out fight?
