Arlen Specter: Why I Support the Stimulus

I found it interesting to see how Senator Specter tried to distill opposition for the stimulus package. Rather than sticking to the party line, he is trying to work towards his reelection in 2010. I am not exactly sure this was the most strategic way to go about this because his fellow Republicans may not be so endearing and helpful if he runs again in two years. I can see why he would vote in favor of the package considering he is coming from a state that is continuing to show its liberalism in elections. Much like Senator Collins from Maine, his constituents are not as wholeheartedly conservative as many of his colleagues in Congress. But if he believes the stimulus package will work, then I am glad he is voting with his conscience rather than being loyal to a party. Loyalty to the party is not what we need at this point in time, if we are going to pass a package such as this, then we need all of the Congressmen to get together and put forth the best possible scenario.
