There is still work to be done!

I was extremely fortunate this week to not only attend the Inauguration but also two balls. Over this two-day experience there was one thing in particular I noticed: the racial composition of the crowd at the Inauguration vs. that of the partygoers at the balls. At the Inauguration, the crowd (at least to me) seemed disproportionately comprised of minorities given the overall make up of the United States. This is not a surprise given the symbolic nature of Obama’s presidency. Yet at the balls, the crowd was 98% white. Thus, those who believe the election of a black president marks the final stop on a long journey of equality need to look again. There is still much work to be done!

Interesting, isn't it? Check out my post from the WaPo on race and the social scene in D.C.--very interesting stuff.
