South Africa Ramps up Aids Treatment
After a decade of downplaying the crisis, South Africa's government is finally going to do something about its AIDS epidemic. Former President Thabo Mbeki refused to acknowledge that HIV causes AIDS and instead argued that AIDS was concocted by Westerners to create a market for expensive drugs. Now, South Africa's new Health Minister Barbara Hogan is reversing a decade of denial and innaction. Hogan has a monstrous task in front of her given that 5.7 million South Africans are infected and only 700,000 are currently recieving antiretroviral drugs. Does anyone know if Obama/Congress has a plan to help South Africa afford millions of drugs?
