As the Stimulus prepares to take flight out of Congress and into the American economy, joblessness is rising at an nearly exponential rates. Both comforting and nerve wracking is the fact that the US is not the only country being hit hard by this recession. The article reports that by the end of 2009, the number of jobless people around the world could reach 50 million. This to me is terrifying, especially at a time when we're getting ready to leave the isolated, protected world of college and attempt to enter the real world.
As frightening as the number of people without jobs is, the fact that the recession is causing riots and dangerous protests throughout the world is scarier. I was still in Athens when the riots broke out there; people in Greece and around the world are so disturbed by the state of the economy that they are turning to violence. The worst part is, the destruction of shops and property only leads to more unemployment, which in turn leads to more lawlessness. And so the cycle goes.
