Obama pokes fun at failed commerce pick

For a problem that continues to surround President Obama, I think he was able to get away with a potential target to his presidency. Laughter and jokes can ease the pain and downplay some of the seriousness of what actually occurs. On a night that President Obama praised Lincoln, he also essentially offered him the job as Secretary of Commerce after Senator Gregg resigned. I think this was a smart move because it put him against petty political banter that could harm his public support. Although Senator Gregg withdrew and President Obama lost a chance for bipartisan appearance in his cabinet, it probably is for the best for both Democrats and Republicans. Democrats will be able to get their own into the cabinet position and the GOP will save one of its seats in the Senate that would have been a toss-up in 2010.
