Supreme Court Upholds Free Speech in Fred Phelps Case

As you all may remember, earlier this year Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church claimed they would protest the screening of "Anatomy of Hate" at Hamilton. Although Phelps and his followers never showed up, the event instigated a candle-lit march and sparked a school-wide discussion in response. Now the supreme court has ruled that Phelps and his followers have the right to display their anti-gay message at U.S. soldiers funerals. Although their message is deeply offensive, their actions are protected under the first amendment.
