Americans' lasting mark on Iraq: colorful, complex tattoos

Hooray cultural exchange!

Honestly though, ever since Obama took office I have been hearing more and more positive news on Iraq. Some of this is reflects legitimate changes and gains in security, but a lot of me thinks this is because Bush is no longer in office and the press feels it can report positively on Iraq without supporting the Republicans.

What do you guys think?

I think it's great to hear about stories like this one.... Understanding what is culturally going on in Iraq, I think is very important. I agree with you Stephen that the press has more freedom to report on different types of stories now that Bush is no longer in office.

I agree with you both that the press now feels it has more open-reign to report positive stories on Iraq. I also think it's good for people reading these culture-share stories because it gives a more human face to the Iraqi people, a side of their country that was rarely reported on in the Bush years.
Political analysts usually believe that an open culture engenders a more open and democratic society ... maybe all that's needed in Iraq are some more tattoos and a mcDonalds. As a country that is used to imposing our culture on others, however, we should also be open to learning more about Iraqi traditions and culture as well.
